🇭🇷 Code of Conduct for Calgary Croatian Community Leadership Meetings

I. Foundational Values (Naše Vrijednosti)

This Code of Conduct is grounded in the core values of the Croatian heritage community: Poštovanje(Respect), Zajedništvo (Togetherness/Community), Odgovornost (Accountability), and Ponos (Pride).

II. Expected Conduct (Očekivano Ponašanje)

All participants are expected to uphold the spirit of Zajedništvo by:

Respectful Communication (Uvijek S Poštovanjem):

Maintain an animated and engaging, yet diplomatic and courteous tone, reflecting the Croatian communication style. Critique ideas and proposals, not individuals. While passionate expression is valued, refrain from personal attacks, aggressive language, or demeaning/discriminatory comments toward any person. Make eye contact as a sign of respect and politeness when addressing others.

Valuing All Voices and Wisdom (Poštovanje Prema Godinama i Raznolikosti):

Demonstrate special respect for our elders and long-standing members (poštovanje prema starijima), recognizing their wisdom and historical perspective. Listen actively and refrain from dominating the conversation. Be mindful of others’ perspectives and ensure a diversity of voices are heard. Welcome new ideas and constructive criticism, fostering a collaborative atmosphere.

Focus on the Community’s Mission (Fokus na Naslijeđe):

Conduct all discussions with the primary goal of preserving and celebrating Croatian cultureand serving the best interests of the entire heritage community. Keep discussions relevant to the agenda items. While small talk and connection are important for building relationships, manage time efficiently to complete the necessary business.

Accountability and Integrity (Iskrenost i Odgovornost):

Act with honesty and integrity in all matters. Disclose any potential conflicts of interest that may affect decision-making.

III. Meeting Protocols (Protokol Sastanka)

Punctuality and Preparation: Arrive on time and review all pre-circulated materials. Decorum: All electronic devices should be set to silent. Avoid parallel work or checking messages unless necessary for the meeting’s function. Decision-Making: Respect the final decisions of the leadership body, even if you voted against them. Once a decision is made, leaders are expected to support it publicly for the unity of the community.

IV. Unacceptable Behavior (Neprihvatljivo Ponašanje)

The following behaviors are considered violations of this Code of Conduct: Harassment, bullying, or discrimination based on age, gender, background, regional origin (e.g., Dalmatia, Slavonia, Istria, etc.), or any other characteristic. Using slurs, epithets, or excessively aggressive language. Sharing confidential information outside of the meeting context without authorization. Any act that endangers the safety or well-being of another participant.
